Car Park and Drop Off

The Main Car Park for the Hospital is located off of the B2164 Kennington Road, very close to junction 10 of the M20. There are approximately 40 accessible parking bays for Blue Badge holders which can mainly be found at the mid-point of the Car Park, close to the Main Building Entrance. There is a designated, level pedestrian route from the accessible spaces to the entrance. Other Car Parks are available close to their respective units, all of which can be accessed via the main hospital access road. There are accessible parking bays provided in all Car Parks. The Main Car Park and Channel Day Surgery Car Park both operate a pay and display policy, with concessions available for blue badge holders. Please contact the parking attendants who are situated near the accessible bays if assistance is required.

Parking for disabled badge holders. The Trust is committed to providing parking facilities for blue badge holders as close to the hospital entrances as possible. The Trust will maintain a minimum of 15% of the public parking for the exclusive use of blue badge holders. These marked bays will be free of charge and will allow a maximum stay of 3 hours. Blue badge holders who park in the pay and display parking will be required to purchase a ticket from the pay and display machines to cover the length of their stay. Parking for blue badge holders on double yellow lines or hatched areas is prohibited at all times.

Drop Off points have also been provided near to each entrance to the Hospital. There are dropped kerbs close to all drop offs, allowing step free access to the pavements. Restricted waiting times apply in some areas; all details are clearly signed.

Access at Entrance

There is level access available to all entrances to this Hospital, with a stepped alternative provided to the Renal Services Entrance. The Main Building Entrance, Elizabeth Browne and Arundel Units and Renal Services Entrances all consist of double, sliding, automatic doors. The Channel Day Surgery Entrance has double, automatic, inward opening doors. Visitors should be aware that there is a drainage grating outside this entrance. All entrances lead to entrance lobbies with level access and suitable surfaces for the passage of wheelchairs.

The Accident and Emergency Department Entrance consists of double, inward opening, manually powered doors. There are push pads to activate the doors on either side of the entrance at an accessible height.

Reception

There are various receptions available throughout the building, most of which have lowered counter sections. Portable induction loops are provided at some receptions, visitors should consult with staff if these are required at alternative desks. The portable induction loops can be moved from desk to desk if required. Seating with armrests is available within reception lobbies and staff will offer assistance if required. A cash machine is available in the Main Reception Lobby; visitors should be aware that there is a service charge for this facility.

The Hospital can provide a communication aid book which contains useful phrases and information in large print, sign language and alternative spoken languages. These communication aids can be found at the Main Reception and Volunteer Helpdesk in the Main Reception Lobby.

Facilities

There are a number of accessible toilets located throughout the hospital, mainly centred around reception and waiting areas. Please refer to the hospital plan for details. Many of the departments and wards also have facilities for ambulant disabled users. General male and female toilets are also available. Baby changing facilities have been provided in many locations, however the height of the units may not be convenient for all, in particular wheelchair users.

There is a coffee and snack bar located in the main hospital reception area. There is adequate seating both at tables or in a lounge style area. The main hospital restaurant is located on the ground floor which can be accessed by lifts. There is a large seating area and highchairs can be provided. The restaurant offers a full and varied menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner. A number of vending machines are available around the hospital site, including the Main Reception Lobby, providing a range of hot and cold drinks and snacks for visitors. The Hospital League of Friends has a shop, also located in the Main Reception Lobby. The shop stocks a range of gifts, cards and confectionery as well as sandwiches and snacks.

Access to All Areas

The main hospital building is housed over 3 floors. Access to all areas is afforded by lifts or stairs. The lifts are large enough to accommodate hospital beds, with the lift controls at an accessible height. There are two main lift and stair lobbies with multiple lifts available at each site for maximum capacity.

Most of the main circulation routes around the hospital are along wide corridors with directional signage at key points. Many of the internal doors are either automatic or are held in the open position by automatic fire detection closing devices. Intercoms are available at entrances to restricted access areas. Lighting around the building is good and the floor surfaces are suitable for all users.
